Insight #1

Virtual CISO (vCISO), CISO on Demand: These services are aka “Please help me short-term with security!” All of these outsourced security practitioner services have one thing in common: a small business knows they need help, but they don’t realize that security is a journey and not a destination. You can’t just “be secure,” stop and not continually improve. If you want security, invest in the proper team to make it happen.

Insight #2

The latest Okta breach really shows the importance of exposing logs to your customers (see CloudFlare, 1Password and BeyondTrust, which all detected it before Okta). Customers can see problems well before you in many cases and are like an extension to your security team. Also, please do not end up on the Audit Logs Wall of Shame: Exposing audit logs is table stakes.

Insight #3

As the global Cybersecurity Awareness Month winds down for 2023, it's imperative that the software and security industry takes a look at how we do business, start requiring BASIC and strong security mechanisms, and stop relying on users to do it. If we don’t change, we will still have the same cybersecurity focus initiatives 20 years from now.
